PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SEWAGE

It comprises the color, odor, temperature, turbidity and presence of solids. Colour of sewage and most wastewater ranges from gray to black (in Nepal) i.e. most of sewage have shades of black but it depends upon the age and decomposition of sewage. As the decomposition goes on it gradually darkens because of sulphide contents provide black colour.
Odor is simply foul however, it too depends upon the constituents, if it is just sullage then there is no bad odor; but if it contains industrial effluent or excreta of animal and human or discharge from slaughterhouse then it’s really stinky.
Temperature depends upon season, climate as well as amount of water mixed, particularly in winter and rainy season, the temperature drops and conversely, during summer temperature rises. In general, it ranges from 15-25 degree centigrade and sometimes 30 degree centigrade, but it somehow related with biological decomposition too.
